Childhood cataracts are not common. It can be present from birth (congenital) or appear later (developmental). It can be hereditary, due to genetic or metabolic disorders, intrauterine infections, prematurity, trauma, while in a large percentage the causes remain unknown. Surgical treatment, when necessary.

If the cataract is congenital (apparent from the first months of life) and operable, then the operation should be done in the first 2 months of life. The decision concerns the doctor and the parents.
