Retinopathy of Prematurity (AP)

Premature infants with a birth age of less than 32 weeks of gestation, and a birth weight of less than 1500 grams, present an increased risk of retinopathy of prematurity. It is a condition characterized by non-completion of the normal vasculature of the retina. When the condition appears, newborns must immediately undergo special treatments (laser, intraocular injections). However, all premature children should be monitored on a long-term basis because they are at increased risk of:

  • High myopia
  • Strabismus
  • Amblyopia
  • Glaucoma
  • Visual-perceptual / Visual-spatial problems due to ec. damage
